Weigh In: Who Should Get the Boot?

As banks falter and markets melt around the world, government officials are scrambling to stop the bleeding. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson worked feverishly to get his $700 billion rescue bill passed and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke gives his economic outlook later today.

We want to know if you would replace either official—and if you would, who would you want to take his place?

Replace the FED as an institution. Implement Gold as a means for global exchange. Fix specific blame on, and punish, the Congressional leadership in power from January 2000 - December 2006 for lack of oversight. Reasonable and Prudent individuals know that the existing problems did not just appear from thin air in 2007. The market is in the process of punishing the leaders on Wall Street that were involved (Bear, AIG, etc.), and is rewarding the prudent (JPMorgan, New York Life, etc.).

It's time to take our country back people!! We have been deceived on a scale that has never been seen before and we are being setup for a new war. A day will come when the holders of our debt will want the assets for the debt they hold. What will the American people do?... Give up land to a foreign country? Go to work for a foreign country? No... we will resist and that will be grounds for war. We have been setup by the snakes that have lied to us in order to gain power. They have sold us down the river to ensure that their families will ALWAYS stay on top and enjoy the benefits of the working mans labor. Prepare for a time when we MUST rise up against DOMESTIC enemies and take our country back. Make no mistake that it is coming and you MUST be ready or you and your family will be rolled in the process. Understand that freedom is NOT free and sacrifices MUST be made to ensure the well being of your family. No One will come to defense if you cannot defend yourself. Rise up, be the men that our founding fathers wanted us to become.

Chris in Hell, Mi

I am astounded by the dumb comments on here. Brainwashed by party politics. This isn't what America should be about!!! Freddie and Fannie are a tip of the iceburg. Hear of AIG? How about Leman Bros? Execs at JPMorgan came up with credit default swaps, ever hear of those? Do your homework before you try to blame it on anybody. Try googling topics, read, and get your news from a couple of sources, then make your comments. Try not to be small minded too, while your at it. Good luck! Don't vote for Barack or John, they sold us out to big biz bozos with this bailout. who should get the boot? Its been given to the American tax payer already...

October 7, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Joe from WI

Both should leave their post. As a provision of the $700 Billion bailout, all CEO's tied to banks needing taxpayer money should have been fired, along with their staff and board of directors. Change starts at the top. It is humorous to see how well this bailout is working (2 BUSINESS DAYS LATER). What arrogance our government has to think it can out think the market. Our leader just won't learn their lesson. We need to recall every elected official that has voted for the bailout. CLEAN OUR HOUSE!

October 7, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Greg Trees

Comments by Treeman: Chris Cox, did do his job, out. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Chuck Shumer, are vote buyers with our tax dollars. They tried to add a $400 billion dollar ear mark to Friday's bailout bill for ACORN. (They are the worst!!) I've been watching Congressman Waxman hearing for the last two days. Waxman has a brain in his head but he's shielding the Democrats. Many of the congressman on this committee are a joke!! They can't put two sentences together. By the way they talk they couldn't balance a check book let alone protect your and my tax dollars or make laws that could do so. These hearings will produce nothing but eye wash. I've heard very little in the way of concrete questions or answers.

I still can't understand why everyone thinks that "their" congressman or senator is not to blame, and all of these bums are reelected every year. Barney Frank is disliked by many in Massachusetts, yet the People's Republic of Cambridge & surrounding yuppie liberal strongholds keep sending him back to congress. I wish every voter would look at congress as a whole, and parties aside, ask a simple question - "Am I satisfied with the performance of this congress ?" and vote according to your answer. If everyone instead re-elects their own hack, and blames everyone else, we'll be stuck with more of the the same rhetoric and finger pointing as the country slides toward a depression. As for the CEOs, how is it that they keep their $Billion golden parachutes, their summer homes, their mansions, while the working stiff loses his retirement savings? Simple - the working stiff doesn't finance political campaigns. We truly have the best congress that money can buy.

October 7, 2008 at 2:37 pm

It's not rocket science (except in the new socialist America): Remove and arrest the following: 1. Barney Frank 2. Ben Bernanke 3. Henry Paulson 4. Christopher Dodd Those are the prime suspects in this mess. They individually presided over a debacle to defaud the American taxpayer. After they are in jail, start with the executives in charge! This is a mess and it is growing. Someone IS responsible.

October 7, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Boot out Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Franklin Raines just to start. Then find a way to boot out Pelosi too.

October 7, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Two efforts were made to fix the problem by Republicans. I think everyone who voted it down should go to jail. Chris Dodd and Barney Frank need to be in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives. It is a shame that the minority party in the Senate can control what goes out if their minority is greater than 33%.

October 7, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Lynn Miller

I am amazed at how many people actually know where the problem started and who perpetuated it. They must watch FOX after all. Carter, Clinton, Frank, Dodd, Schumer, Obama, etc.

kelly cooney

bill clinton even said it the dems should have done something. barney frank and chris dodd need to be jailed. i sold a 200k house in 01 to what we now know was grossly unqualified. they got a second mortgage on my house before even signing the 1st. the whole thing in a nut-shell is the house was appraised for 190k that leads me to think about all the mortgage brokers. by the way the house was reposessed 119 days later. kelly cooney

October 7, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Barney Frank, Barney Frank etc....

October 7, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Congress, that have had control of the house and senate the past two years. Since then is when it all started to fall apart. Thanks for the change! Can't wait for mOre change. Can we really afford it.

I like to start the investigation at The Federal Reserve!

I Agree with previous bloggers: Paulson should be arrested and replaced. Barney Frank should be removed and tried for fraud. Chris Dodd is another criminal who should be voted out. While we're at it, ditch Reid and Pelosi. Wouldn't this be a great time to give the FAIR TAX Proposal a try? The economy would explode with growth, we'd quickly retire the debt, people would have more in savings and the credit crisis would be a bad memory. I'm not holding my breath waiting for leadership.

October 7, 2008 at 2:24 pm

dump all the incumbants

October 7, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Barney Franks would be a good start - but the Dem's decided this when they voted - right down the line - to let the bill die on the floor!

October 7, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Before you fire anyone, get all the money back from those idiots at the top of the food chain at Fannie and Freddie, then arrest them. Then take greedy, corrupt, corporate thugs at Lehman's, etc., confiscate their many homes, condo's, planes, boats, islands, bank accounts, sell and pay back to those investors/employees who lost their life savings and if there is any left over, use that to retire some of that $700 mill bailout. Then never, ever, ever do this again. Wall Street would have corrected itself. The rest can come up with 'creative' ways of staying afloat. I am sure Barney Franke or Nancy 'no demoncrat had anything to do with this fiscal mess' Pelosi would be happy to help make up the rest. If they spent less time pointing fingers and more time listening, we would not be in the mess we are today.

October 7, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Why are the Republicans and the President getting all the heat regarding the economic melt down. All economic bills usually begin in the US House, The Senate also has a lot of power to initiate bills. Well who has been in charge the last 4 years or so...the Democrats! The president can sugest legislation and veto bills (rarely), but the brunt of this crisis fall on the Democrates. I would replace both ..with Warren Buffett , and our former Fed Chairmen.

October 7, 2008 at 2:11 pm

CONGRESS

October 7, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Both should replaced and criminal charges filed. As a matter of fact, I will be voting for whoever is NOT the incumbent in all local elections. I don't care what party they are with--I agree that "my dog could do better."

"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind" "Propaganda (1928)": by Edward Bernays

October 7, 2008 at 2:03 pm

I think we should make a clean sweep. Start by getting rid of every Senator and Representative who was in charge of Fannie and Freddie hearings and oversite - Democrat and Republican both. Then anyone who sat on those committees who took money from Fannie and Freddie. This includes Obama. Secondly eliminate all CEO's from Fannie, Freddie and all financial institutions who dealt in the culture of greed called subprime mortgages. The survivors might just be a little more careful. Of course in reality not one of these things will happen. The Senators and Representatives will keep on being elected and the CEO's will continue to administer (and take their golden parachutes).

October 7, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer and anyone else who voted against any of the bills that might have stopped the bleeding. I guess that would mean most of the democrats since they voted down party lines instead of for the good of our country.

October 7, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Fire them all and start over. Obama is waiting in the wings to do even more damage. Write in Ron Paul or Mitt Romney for President, fire the Senate and Congress, ALL incumbents, including our turncoat Judd (jughead) Gregg of New Hampshire. Hang that fat toothless Barney Frank, as it will send a powerful message of what happens when you totally screw the American taxpayers!

October 7, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Start with Bernanke, for he continued the rate reduction which devalued the dollar and created a weaker dollar. Hold firm on rate cuts. Barney Frank-Chris Dodd-Nancy Pelosi-Harry Reid should all lose their committee assignments and should all be investigated by the FBI and SEC. I know their constituents will not vote them out, for they do not have the balls to do that. Obama is going to be elected due to some major duping of the people, and we will go from a recession to a major depression. The people are just believing what the media is telling them, and blaming McCain instead of blaming the true fat cats, the names mentioned above and the ceo's who took major golden parachutes.

October 7, 2008 at 1:33 pm

joe valcourt

Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd are the primary culprits among others. We have just witnessed in the passing of the bailout, the literal shredding of the Constitution of the United States. If Obama becomes President, it will be the end of the nation as we have known it. Life under the Bush administration will seem like a lost paradise. Let's face it, economic crimes against the law biding citizens have and are continuing to be committed. Folks need to vote not only in November, but with their wallets by getting out of debt, staying out of debt and buying only what they need.

October 7, 2008 at 1:33 pm

It is totally amazing to me that this whole mess is now up before a committee in congress, the one and only organization which could have kept this from happening in the first place. Now we are only looking at the the severance pay checks of the big execs. Why not look at the underlying issues such as campaign finance issues? Who got the biggest and the mostest in the congress (Senate and House)? Where is the backbone of the American people, can they not read and understand that they have been sold down the river for a few million dollars in hack money? We need to clean out the den of thieves and then get on with our lives. THis mess is going to take years to clean up and we aren't the only ones who will be paying, our children will as well and maybe our grandchildren.

October 7, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Charnol DeLoach

BARNEY FRANKS AND SENATOR DOBBS ALONG WITH THE OTHER MONEY GRUBBERS WHO WERE SUPPOSED TO BE OVERSEEING THIS BUT INSTEAD WERE BUSY PUTTING MONEY IN THEIR POCKETS. IT WILL BE A REAL SHAME IF THE DEMOCRATES ARE ALLOWED TO CONTROL CONGRESS IN THE NEXT SESSION. IF OBAMA IS ELECTED AND THE DEMOCRATES RUN CONGRESS CHAVES MIGHT AS WELL BUY A PENT HOUSE APARTMENT IN MANHATTEN.

October 7, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Barney Frank should be indicted and Bill O’Rielly should be allowed to go in and drag him out of the Capitol Building.

October 7, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Everyone in the house... the senate... and all the lobbyists...Any bills or referendums that are introduced are just sent to committees and are basicly never seen from again... ever.... Nothing ever gets done. Ever! What a waste of tax payer $$.It has been worse since the Dems came into power. I am and Independent. Time for the average citizen to say enough. Govenment is we the people... common sense people..not for lawyers which they all are or for lobbyists....If it costs so much to be elected, then these elected officials are beholding to someone... obviously not "we the people" Maybe just do a lottery to hold public office. The chances of getting someone with "common sense" is probably better than what we have now.

October 7, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Barney Frank, Chris Dodd for starters. How about Franklin Raines? He was right in the middle of mess. Now he is a heartbeat away from possible being a cabinet member in the next administration. Don't forget Barack Obama - he thinks Raines is OK!!

October 7, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Chris Knepper

It seems to me Paulson and Bernanke are just trying to clean up someones mess, why is that not obvious. Congress has been warned that this was coming all the way back to Greenspan, who doesn't remember that? Who started these institutions Fannie and Freddie? Who failed to listen to Greenspan? I don't here many congressmen blaming other congressmen like we would normally. I think it is plain to see that it is because most of the ones that do the usual finger pointing are the ones that are to blame. "One of Fannie Mae’s main defenders in the House – Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., a recipient of more than $40,000 in campaign donations from Fannie since 1989 – was once romantically involved with a Fannie Mae executive." He is the current Chairman of the Financial Services Committee. Here is the House description of his committee "Considers measures on banks and banking, economic stabilization, insurance, international finance, and securities." ECONOMIC STABILIZATION it says....good job Barney!

October 7, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Jeff Kerr

First, take ALL the CEO's and CFO's, and upper management of the largest past and present brokerage firms outside, line them up against a wall, and you can imagine the next step. The next in line should be people like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Alan Greenspan, and the list is just too long. These people have all committed treason against the USA and should be treated as such. Why all these criminals aren't arrested and being sent to prison is incredibly unbelievable.... this was out and out fraud and robbery from start to finish by both financial managers and our inglorious politicians at the US Capitol.

October 7, 2008 at 1:16 pm

The public should look first at the start of this mess and call out the culprits of both parties. They should then go the the recent events commencing in 1999 and look at what has happened and call out the culprits for those events. They public should then look at the latest sponsors of greed in the current congress. Whomever voted down the warning bills that Frannie and Freddie were in trouble and needed help should all be censored and evicted from office. THe primary folks that really need to be looked at are Chris Dodd, Barney Franks. Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, George Bush, Hank Paulson, Harry Reid, all of these are the primary culprits in the down fall of the economy and the laying on of severe financial difficulties to the entire American population and even on folks overseas.

October 7, 2008 at 1:16 pm

All those in congress responsible for encouraging bad lending practices should be replaced (especially Dodd & Frank). They should also lose their federally paid benefits (i.e. healthcare, pension, etc) and be fined. All this money should go toward decreasing the bailout package.

October 7, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Oh, this one is real easy. Barney Freak, I mean Frank.

October 7, 2008 at 1:15 pm

Agreed! All politicians plus career bureacrats are the problem and have not the capacity to find a solution, Get rid of them now!!!! Agreed! Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, House Speaker and the Senate Majority Leader are to blame for this mess. No action means no solution, no discussion means no options. Maybe the 10% who approve of congress's performance should vote for them & the remainder vote them out! But this mess cannot rest soley with the Democratic led congress, Republicans had the lead until '04 and this was developing on their watch as well. If we vote them all out come November, who is left, Ralph Nader, he seems to awfully quiet of late, maybe he does not have a clue either. Too bad this did not rear its head during the primary season, maybe our choices would be better now.

October 7, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Fox obviously does not let people speak their mind as they have removed my posts which clearly points the blame to the democratic leaders.

October 7, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Nobody in Congress or government has yet admitted that the Community Reinvestment Act which, essentially, required subprime loans to unqualified borrowers is the root cause of the meltdown. Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are chief among those who supported this ridiculous, socialist, piece of legislation and continue to defend it. Those who continue to support the CRA, defend the poor business practices of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, or failed to support the legislative proposal in 2005 to subject these organizations to strict supervisory oversight should all go. In essence, the Congress, Federal Reserve, Treasury, Office of Thrift Supervision, Conptroller of the Currency and all supervisory organization have failed the american people and must have new, objective leadership before the root cause will be remedied.

October 7, 2008 at 1:06 pm

ANOUCK LE FUR

Frank, Dodd, Cox, Pelosi should resign. The resulting "rescue/bail out" package opens the door to pure socialism and will corrupt our system for ever. The CEOs of any company that failed creating this crises should be investigated and charged with at least gross negligence. Their bonus package for the past 3 years should be reclaimed by the government and go directly against the rescue package.

October 7, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd, and just about all the other Democrats. They're all idiots who have sold out the American taxpayer to the tune of $700 billion. If you notice the press releases, they're all grinning from ear to ear as they have just socialized a large portion of the American economy.

October 7, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Robert Morgan

I agree with most of the comments on who is guilty. And Yes, put Ron Paul in charge, otherwise all Americans need to make the call “Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life here”, or hope that “Mars Attacks” does in fact destroy congress.

October 7, 2008 at 1:02 pm

WALL STREET HATES SOCIALIST PRESIDENTS. LOOK FOR 4 MOR YEARS OF MISERY WHEN THAT RADICAL BASTARD GETS INTO OFFICE. MARK MY WORDS.

October 7, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Dodd, Frank, Cox, Bush, Paulson, Bernanke, and everyone who was involved with or voted for the bailout! That means you too McCain. McCain finally had a chance to take a leadership role by voting against the bailout and standing up for the American taxpayer and what did he do? He caved in like the spineless moderate that he is and went for the uneducated independent, moderate vote. Instead of sticking to conservative principles and informing the people why a socialist takeover of the financial markets is a terrible thing, he voted for it and in turn just voted for more pork in one bill than he has in his entire career. If McCain ends up losing this election he can look back to his vote on the bailout and realize this was the issue that lost the election for him. If he would have stood up to the corruption like he claims he does and went against this bailout he would have won the election for sure. I'm voting for you John, but I'm doing so with my nose plugged. Your lucky that the other guy is 10 times worse.

October 7, 2008 at 1:00 pm

where is barny franks teeth?

October 7, 2008 at 12:58 pm

R Strayer

Hold accountable the Congressmen and Senators like Frank, Dodd, Reid, Obama and others that supported the Community Reinvestment Act, or allowing sub-prime lending while they were stuffing their pockets full of campaign money. Hold accountable ACORN and Community Organizers, like Obama for forcing banks to lend money to those who couldn't afford it in the first place. Hold accountable Paulson and the other CEO's who took advantage of the situation stuffing their pockets full. We and those in Congress who didn't take part in this financial mess need to hold them all accoutable and make them pay, send them to the clink...sorry no free ride...no slap on the wrist...send them to the clink. Unfortunately, I don't think those in power be it in the the executive, legislative or judicial branch who didn't take part in this fiasco have the "BALLS" to do it! Check out your representative or Senator dig for information to see where they stood on these issues....if they were a party to this corruption VOTE THEM OUT!

October 7, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Congress! Back when I was a teen and cut yards for some cash, my parents said, "Make sure your yard is cleaned first." Congress failed to oversee, took payoffs, (perceived as bribes) by most common folks. Seems like congress and the economist have also forgotten Economics 101. The markets are reflecting the tenet that capitalism works, the more government tries to inject itself in free market system they worst it will become. They "Government" should be monitoring and making sure laws and regulations are followed, not entering the business world of buying and selling of assets. Hopefully someone will make sure that congress is also brought before a hearing. They are as guilty as any CEO or CFO who may have failed in this.
